The Malankara Catholic Eparchy of Bathery is the fruit of the missionery zeal and desire for the unity of the Chruch expressed by the Re-union movement under the Diocese of Thiruvalla. His Holiness Pope John Paul II erected the Eparchy of Bathery on 28th October 1978 and His Excellency Most Rev. Cyril Mar Baselios was appointed as the first Bishop of Bathery. After 17 years of inspiring leadership in the Diocese, His Excellency Most Rev. Cyril Mar Baselios left for Trivandrum as the Metropolitan Archbishop and head of the Malankara Catholic Church. Most Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Divannasios was appointed as the second Bishop of Batehry. On 25th January 2010, His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Divannasios is transferred to the newly erected Eparchy, Puttur. And Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos installed His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Joseph mar Thomas as the third Bishop of Bathery at St.Thomas Cathedral on 13th April 2010.
